FEMA EAS “NPT” test Feb 24, 1:20pm – Info on webinars

Oklahoma is one of 22 states slated for FEMA’s next regional EAS test which will likely be conducted on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 1:20 PM CT. The test message will use the National Periodic Test (NPT) event code with an audio message that sounds similar to a typical Required Monthly Test text.  Participation in the test is voluntary but encouraged. Plan on test to take approximately 53secs.

OAB, and your Oklahoma EAS Chairmen are working with FEMA to promote a series of webinars beginning with station executives and state emergency management officials to briefly explain IPAWS and discuss the test plans. Further webinars will target engineers and provide more technical discussions of IPAWS, concluding with step-by-step EAS device configuration instructions for the various units in the field.  Most EAS systems will require additional configuration to process the NPT code.

The “NPT” test will not replace any scheduled required monthly (RMT) or weekly tests (RWT).

OAB will survey stations after the test to measure success. The test is to help Broadcasters confirm how their systems will respond to an NPT prior to the FCC making the NPT a requirement.  Previous tests have revealed that many stations face significant challenges and this is an opportunity to resolve them before the mandatory test scheduled later this year.

The schedule of webinars are below. We hope you will make use of them.

Sincerely,

Roger Herring and Britt Lockhart
EAS Broadcast Co-Chairmen
